Argentine researchers led the study that proved the efficacy of the first vaccine approved against the coronavirus.

In the midst of the pandemic, Equipo Ciencia led the research study that led to the development of the first safe and effective vaccine that brought the world out of the health emergency.

Data from the global study were published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the world's highest impact science journal, and showed that Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine prevented 95% of coronavirus cases in 43,548 participants (162 cases of COVID-19 in volunteers who received placebo versus 8 cases in people who received the vaccine).

A few days after this publication, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for emergency use such a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine.

In Argentina, Dr. Polack, Dr. Gonzalo Perez Marc and Dr. Romina Libster, implemented for this study the largest program globally, enrolling 5,764 volunteers, five times more than the second site where this test was performed in the rest of the world. This represents a feat of science, medicine and the conduct of clinical studies carried out by more than a thousand professionals who worked tirelessly in our country.
